Not-So-Reality Television

Reality shows are to cable television what the news media is to Donald Trump: fake.

The first popular reality show was aired in 1992. It was a show on MTV called The Real World and it focused on everyday issues young adults face when forced to live with strangers of different backgrounds and ethnicities.

The cast was made up of typical looking 20-somethings with real problems. It was relatable on many levels and had just enough drama to keep you tuning in every week. I’m certain some of the lines and scenes were staged or edited, but nothing like the reality shows of today.

These days, reality shows stick to the same predictable formula with maybe a few differentiators to make each one seem unique. Producers want good-looking, young people who have an affinity for drama and no real moral compass to speak of.

These reality stars divulge what really happens on set and behind the scenes of some of today’s most popular reality shows.

The Great Weed Scare

Apparently, there are still people out there who are absolutely PETRIFIED of marijuana — historically referred to as the “gateway drug”. In some social circles, it is believed that one hit of the devil’s lettuce will turn you into a ravenous drug-fiend who ends up homeless, joins a gang, inevitably robs a gas station and ends up in prison.

Look, I get it. If you’re from an older generation that was constantly bombarded with commercials warning of the dangers of pot, and you’ve never actually smoked it yourself, the idea of it being legalized can seem off-putting. Kind of like if twenty years from now, Miley Cyrus’s music was not only deemed safe but could potentially cure a multitude of ailments. It just would be impossible for me to wrap my mind around.

So, yes, I can sort of understand why lawmakers are pushing back on initiatives to make marijuana more accessible, but some senators have REALLY gotten creative with their arguments as to why this plant could cause mass destruction.

Read one New Jersey senator’s crazy conspiracy theory here.
