“Only the shallow know themselves.” – Oscar Wilde
Negativity and Neurons
It’s 6 in the morning… I’ve only been awake for an hour, but I’ve probably already complained at least 3 times.
Granted, one of those complaints was waking up at 5 am — which I think we can all agree is a legitimate complaint — but the other things? Totally inconsequential in the grand scheme of things.
Getting in the habit of complaining is frighteningly easy and adaptive. It also probably isn’t something any of us are consciously aware we are doing until we find ourselves in the presence of a REAL Negative Nancy or Debbie Downer. Then, we become hyper-aware of how ridiculous a lot of the things we bitch about are.
According to science, saying and feeling negative things can actually change your brain structure and neuron wiring over time. So, the next time you go to complain about a long line or the internet bring slow or your annoying boss, consider whether it’s worth the health risk.
Here’s how negativity influences your brain.
Hockey is fun to watch because it’s one of the few sports in which it’s accepted (and even encouraged) to fight outside the perimeters of the game.
If one hockey player gets pissed at an opponent, gloves and helmets are definitely coming off . Now, I realize they have a penalty box precisely for situations like this, but that’s more of a formality than anything else.
Obviously, being unprofessional, unsportsmanlike, or just a general jerk shouldn’t be tolerated in any sport, but athletes getting worked up over a bad call or a bad play isn’t exactly unnatural. Adrenaline and testosterone are pumping. Plus these games are both passions AND livelihoods for these players, so it only makes sense that they have outbursts from time to time.
What ISN’T ok is for a referee to use their power to ruin a game (and potentially someone’s career) because he or she put their ego before their duties as mediator.
And this is precisely what happened at the US Open recently.
