The True Meaning Of Love

The Nightcap

APERITIF:

“Despair is the damp of hell, as joy is the serenity of heaven.” – John Donne

Not what you think

The word ‘love’ is something that is thrown around unconsciously and, to be honest, it’s beginning to lose its effect on us all. When you think of loving someone, it should be something that is felt without remorse and it should be unconditional.

If this is the case, then why do we love someone only when they look the way we want them to look, say the things we want them to say, and believe what we believe?

In this video, we have a cartoon that sketches out the meaning of love and how it is so easily lost when it is not attached to an unconditional commitment. You have a woman happily married to a man and they both share a daughter. The woman gets in an accident and a fire distorts her face, leaving her maimed for life.

This is when the test of love begins to show itself in the story. The husband eventually leaves her because he can no longer stand to see her face–at which time she is left to feel isolated, rejected and alone. She wants to kill herself, but the love that her daughter shows her helps her to understand the true meaning of love. Love is not something that you can turn off or on the moment things don’t go your way. Instead, love remains strong even when things go awry.

The next time you say that you love a song, you love a certain food, or you love the way something smells, just remember that you are using the same word to reflect how you love another person. Do you really love another person the way you love a certain food? Probably not. This is just a small example of how the term itself is being used and abused by us all.

Stuck in a Relationship

Here’s a film about being stuck in a relationship – neither happily being able to stay nor freely being able to move on.

Why do we find it so hard to move forward? Where does the feeling of being stuck come from, and what might we do to overcome it?
